In early April, a consent decree addressing civil claims against BP arising from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill was approved by the court. As part of the consent decree, BP will be paying $5.5 billion in Clean Water Act penalties of which 80% will be deposited in the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Trust Fund. The consent decree means the Science Program will receive an additional $110 million in annual installments between 2017 and 2031. This will bring the total funding for the program to roughly $133 million. The Science Program will also continue to receive 25% of the interest from the trust fund.
